Jeremy Sampson won the Lifetime Achievement Award at the FM AdFocus awards on November 24. It was reward for decades of leadership in SA’s branding and design sector, and marked the first time the award has been won by someone outside the advertising mainstream.
The awards event, at the Alexander Theatre in Braamfontein, was also a success for the Ogilvy group. Ogilvy Johannesburg was Advertising Agency of the Year, Ogilvy Africa was African Advertising Agency Network of the Year, and Ogilvy Cape Town and its client Volkswagen SA were joint winners of Partnership of the Year.
Harry Herber, group MD of The MediaShop was named Agency Leader of the Year. ZA News, the satirical puppet show created by cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro – aka Zapiro — and business partner Thierry Cassuto was Newsmaker of the Year. Glenn van Loggerenberg, who arguably introduced social networking to TV in Africa and who is a leader in the blending of TV and Internet, won the New Broom Award for up-and-coming talent.
There was a special award for TBWA\Hunt\Lascaris Johannesburg for its Billion Dollar Campaign on behalf of The Zimbabwean newspaper. The campaign, which swept the boards at awards shows around the world, won the agency The Chairman’s Award for Excellence, a discretionary award recognising outstanding achievement.
Before the awards were presented, the evening got off to the perfect start with an outstanding speech from Guy Browning, a British humorist and former adman who owns Firehouse Innovation, a consultancy that helps businesses brainstorm new products and services, and new ways of communicating. Browning, whose business books include “Double Your Salary, Bonk The Boss, Go Home Early” had his audience in stitches with his offbeat look at business principles.
