Ireland/Davenport won the Creative Circle’s January Ad of the Month in three categories – television, print and radio. The Walking Dead Season 2 campaign for Fox International came out tops in the TV category. Adcock Ingram topped the radio ratings, while the agency’s work for National Geographic Channel’s The Dog Whisperer, with Cesar Millan, was first and second in print.
Joe Public’s campaign for Clover won the digital category.
Ireland/Davenport’s SA activation campaign for Walking Dead, meanwhile, went viral within days of being uploaded to YouTube. The activation took place in cinemas across the country. Audiences watched what seemed to be a clichéd trailer for a trivial romantic comedy. But towards the end, an actor dressed as a blood-soaked zombie entered the theatre. He lurched to the front of the theatre before the lead actress in the on-screen trailer paused in mid-sentence, reached for a gun and shot the zombie, who collapsed to the ground screaming in pain.
“When the US-based producers of Walking Dead saw the activation their response was that it is an act of genius,” says Thandi Davids, of Fox International Channels. “The team at Ireland/Davenport has done an amazing job.”
Agency MD Susan Napier says: “It’s time SA pushed the envelope when creating ads. We have to compete on an international level and I am proud to work with an agency that is not afraid to present such a jaw-dropping concept. It was a hit from the beginning and the 808 677 views we have on YouTube is proof that the SA consumer is ready for creativity that is out of this world.”
