It was always too much to hope Mediaedge could repeat the stellar performance that got it named the 2008 AdFocus media agency of the year. The emphasis since then, says Swanepoel, has been on bedding down Pick n Pay and Brandhouse, the major wins of the previous year, and consolidating the business for the tough economic environment.

So nothing of note in new accounts - a variety of small advertisers with combined annual billings of R15m. That's small change for an agency with total billings of more than R1,5bn. Nevertheless, with PnP and Brandhouse starting to come into the equation, total billings grew 14%.

Meanwhile, it lost two accounts last year: Virgin Mobile and the Independent Electoral Commission. The latter was an election-related fixed-term contract.
