Initiative Media is the AdFocus 2009 Media Agency of the Year. The undoubted highlight of the review period was winning the R300m billings SAB account in a five-way pitch that included the previous holder, MindShare. Other accounts won included the SA Dairy Board, Ferrero, Canderel, Varsity College, Boxer Superstores, Epson and Natal Wholesale Jewellers.

Billings during the review period were up 40% and revenue 35%, following a year in which Initiative lost the Unilever account.

A dedicated outdoor division, INM Media, was launched during the year, headed by former Clear Channel executive Eric Williams. Initiative also increased its presence in new media. It partnered Stonewall + Media to handle online strategy, planning, social networking and digital design, and MKTM to handle mobile marketing.
