Awards come and go; the best ones stay. The Financial Mail AdFocus Awards have been an institution since 1990, recognising the best of South African communications. In their early years, the awards concentrated almost entirely on above-the-line advertising and its proponents.
Since then, they have become increasingly inclusive; as the awards list below indicates. AdFocus today acknowledges agencies, relationships and individuals across the communications spectrum.
But it’s not just longevity that sets apart the AdFocus Awards; It’s also their credibility and transparency. We make no secret of the judging process. Every response to the AdFocus agency questionnaires feeds into one of four judging criteria: New Business and Growth; Business Retention and Relationships; Training and Industry Recognition; and Empowerment/Social Responsibility with the African Network award working similarly.
Jurors discuss each entry then score in secret. Where there are sufficient numbers, there will be two rounds: one to determine a category shortlist and the other for a final score. Judging is audited by Deloitte and jurors do not know the identity of winners until the awards evening in November.
The Individual and Partnership of the Year awards are decided by a straightforward vote, after jury discussion. This vote is also secret.
