Dressing-down for SA men
Written by News desk on July 7, 2010 – 5:48 pm -Bad news for men in the SA business world: your female colleagues don’t think you’re worth getting dressed up for. Women here spend a third as long getting ready for wotk as their counterparts in the UK.
A recent UK survey found that women there spend 76 minutes getting ready for work on a Monday morning. About 25 minutes is spent on hair, 18 on make-up, 16 trying on different combinations of clothes, and the rest on showering and washing. Preparation time gets shorter as the week progresses: to 40 minutes on Tuesdays and 19 minutes on Fridays.
Reasons given for the long Monday preparation include delaying the start of the working week after a relaxing weekend. According to Robyn Farrell, MD of 1st for Women Insurance Brokers in SA, it may also be because “women are possibly more likely to have done laundry over the weekend and therefore have more clean outfits available on Monday to choose from”.
A similar survey in SA has found that women here admit to spending no more than 25 minutes getting ready on Mondays. That’s even less time than UK men, whose 28-minute Monday average shrinks to 11 minutes by Friday.
