Ford India has apologised for a series of advertisements featuring caricatures of bound and gagged women in the boot of a Figo car driven by former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, reports the Agence France Press (AFP) news agency.

Advertisements for the hatchback were created by the Indian unit of global advertising giant JWT and appeared on the website “Ads of the World”. Ford, however, says they were not meant for commercial use.

They appeared online over the weekend, reportedly without Ford’s approval, at a time when India is under fire for its treatment and portrayal of women following a series of sexual assaults. One advert showed three scantily-clad women in the boot of the car with a smiling Berlusconi flashing a peace sign at the wheel, above the tagline: “Leave your worries behind with Figo’s extra-large boot”.

Another featured a Paris Hilton caricature in the driver’s seat with rival US celebrity Kim Kardashian and two other women gagged in the boot.

A third advert shows Michael Schumacher with Formula One rivals Sebastian Vettel, Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso in the back.

Underpants which are claimed to neutralise the smell of flatulence are proving a hit in Japan, whose hard-working businessmen seem to like the idea of breaking wind without getting rumbled.

A Japanese textile company has developed a range of underwear which it says prevent unwelcome odours.

“It took us a few years to develop the first deodorant pants that are comfortable enough to wear in daily life but efficient in quickly eliminating strong smells,” said Nami Yoshida, a spokeswoman for the company, Seiren.

“At first we thought about selling them to those who require nursing care and to hospitals.

“But to our surprise, lots of ordinary people, like businessmen who are in positions that require them to see people on a daily basis, bought them,” she said.

The underwear is manufactured with niff-absorbing ceramic particles in the material fibres.

Seiren developed the technology after being contacted by a doctor who wanted something to disguise the regular parps emitted by people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome.

The company’s range has now expanded to 22 items, including socks that prevent feet from smelling and t-shirts that mask the whiff of sweaty armpits.

A Chinese man divorced his wife and then sued her in court – and won – for being ugly.

According to the report from PlanetIvy, northern China resident Jian Feng reportedly loved his wife, but after the couple gave birth to a baby girl whom he considered “ugly” to the point of being horrifying – and who apparently did not resemble either parent – he demanded to know who the real father was.

It turns out that the Feng was the real father. But Feng says that what his wife – who was not named in the report – didn’t tell him was that before they had ever met, she had undergone over $100,000 in plastic surgery, completely changing the way she looked.

Feng then filed for divorce and sued his wife in a Chinese court, claiming that she got him to marry her under false pretenses due to her appearance. A judge agreed and awarded Feng $120,000 in damages.

It is a phrase you would not associate with one of the holiest men alive.

Indeed, it must have caused the stenographer a little consternation when the Dalai Lama apparently finished his speech with a very frank ‘f*** it’ to an audience of students at Brown University in Rhode Island.

Still, the stenographer had to transcribe what he heard – or thought he had heard – and flashed the phrase up on the closed caption video screens.

So those relying on the screens for dialogue heard His Holiness finish his message of peace by telling them them they could do the unspeakable.

Embarrassingly, the His Holiness was just being polite, telling the audience that if they did not agree with his views on world peace, they could just … forget.

The Dalai Lama, delivering the memorial lecture at Brown University on Wednesday, called on the audience to create a peaceful society through dialogue.

5,600 people were inside the Rhode Island Convention Centre in Providence, although it is not known how many of them thought they heard what the stenographer heard.

The offending phrase came towards the send of the speech, when the 77-year-old said: ‘If you feel these points are not much relevant – not much interest – then forget.’

But the now presumably-blushing stenographer had to go with his first instinct, and the exact phrase he wrote on the screens in the hall was ‘f— it’.

This is not the first time the Dalai Lama has been heard not swearing.

The NY Daily News recounts the occasion he told a crowd in Charlottesville, Vancouver, how we ’should forget about our religious differences’ – causing similar confusion.

This time, Brown University clarified the situation, telling the Daily News: ‘The Dalai Lama’s last word of the day, verified by his personal translator, was “forget”.

Another clip on YouTube also shows the esteemed holy man telling a crowd: ‘We should forget about our religious differences. And also forget, and forget.’

He then looked up at the laughing audience, and asked them: ‘What did I do?’…

A new study has confirmed what we have all suspected for ages: South African consumers turn to their mobile phones when they’re drinking – and three-quarters of them are likely to post photos on social media sites while under the influence.

The study, commissioned by the largest mobile advertising network, InMobi, surveyed 500 people over the age of 18, and a staggering 80% confessed that their social media activity increased while drinking. 76% will freely chat, sms and mail while drinking, although the study stops short of detailing the consequences of these communications. Over-35s, who have presumably learned their lessons the hard way, are more likely to surf the web and play mobile games while drinking.

Daryn Smith who manages the marketing for InMobi Africa and the Middle East said they commissioned the survey to understand to understand drinkers’ preferences and mobile engagement level to assist brands in developing mobile marketing campaigns – and it revealed some interesting insights into the habits of the average South African drinker.

In all, 42% of respondents drink weekly, but only 6% admit to drinking daily. Why do we drink? For higher-income earners, the key drivers are to destress and relax (61%), celebrate special occasions (53%) and bond with family and friends (42%). Lower-income earners prefer to wait for special occasions (64%).

Not surprisingly, where we drink is largely determined by our age groups. 71% of under-35s drink at nightclubs, as opposed to only 35% for over 35s – you’re far more likely to find them at home, or at a friend’s home (82%). Personal preference is key to our choice of drink, according to the survey. Nearly three in four consumers (72%) stick to their favourite drink, and 53% remain loyal to their favourite drink brand. Only 11% try new beverages regularly.

“For us, though, the most interesting thing to come out of this survey is that for most consumers, mobile is a better medium than TV or online for alcohol ads,” said Smith. “But you still need to grab their attention. People love giveaways, discounts and invitations to VIP events – or at least something that is funny!”

The study suggests that tools like mobile coupons have an compelling ability to influence consumer behaviour. 55% of respondents say a coupon would influence their choice of store where they purchase alcohol, and for 54%, it would even influence their choice of drink or brand.

The survey also has some interesting insights for brand and loyalty managers. 40% of respondents prefer to interact with their loyalty programmes via SMS, over 25% for a loyalty card – and only 7% via a website.

“The South African consumer market is ripe for rich media and mobile advertising,” said Smith. “People have their mobiles with them all the time – and brands are beginning to take advantage of this great opportunity to develop hard-hitting messages that have direct effects on consumer behaviour.”

Property magnate Cecil Chao Sze-tsung offered the reward this week after reports that his 33-year-old daughter Gigi Chao, a University of Manchester architecture graduate, had married her long-term female partner in France.

“I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted,” Chao said, describing reports about his daughter’s marriage as “false”.

Chao said the prize money was “an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business”.

“Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work,” he added.

According to the report however, Gigi married Sean Eav, her girlfriend of seven years, in France on April 4.

A photo posted on Gigi’s public Facebook page confirmed that she and her partner were Paris-bound in April this year.

Gigi’s Facebook profile reads: “Helicopter pilot. Social entrepreneur. Creator of expressions in colour and emotion.”

In a 2007 interview she said: “My father took a hands-off approach in parenting. I see him as a friend more than a father.”

Chao denied he would force his daughter to marry a man against her will. But comments posted on the website of the Hong Kong newspaper were widely hostile to his “marriage bounty”.

“How humiliating for this poor woman,” wrote one reader, adding Chao should be “happy that he has such a beautiful daughter who appears to have found happiness with a partner whom she loves”.
