Pepsi hijacks Coke’s Santa
By News desk on July 1, 2011 – 11:00 am -Pepsi Cola has struck at the heart of Coca Cola’s advertising in the US by hijacking Santa Claus. Santa has been one of Coke’s advertising symbols since 1931 and its advertising has been credited with fixing his image as a jolly, bearded, fat man in a red-and-white suit.
But in its latest US campaign, Pepsi shows Santa wearing a red Hawaiian shirt and dancing on the beach. When he goes to the soft-drinks stall for a cold drink, the attendant has two Cokes ready. But Santa shakes his head and says “Make it Pepsi.” The surprised attendant says “But Mr Claus, I thought you had a deal with … you know.” To which Santa replies: “I’m on vacation. Gonna have a little fun!”

Groovin gets the ANC’s election vote

Chillibush wins IDC account.

The account is worth an estimated R20m annually. The IDC says about 100 agencies expressed interest and 37 pitched. Chillibush, founded in 1998, takes over the account from fellow Jo’burg agency Ebony+Ivory. The account was previously held by Draftfcb.

As the tables show, adspend rose 25% in 2007, 11% in 2008 and 6% in 2009. There has been a shift in adspend away from print, radio, cinema and outdoor, towards TV, direct mail and Internet. And the total number of ads last year rose to over 6m.
